It's starting to sound like Jayden Daniels' relationship with LSU might remain fractured for a long time.
Daniels' attorney informed LSU this week that it can no longer use the star quarterback's name, image and likeness. This decision was made after LSU sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett was given the No. 5 jersey for the 2026 season.
Even though Daniels' No. 5 was never officially retired, former LSU coach Brian Kelly refrained from giving players that number. Lane Kiffin, however, had no problem giving it to Pickett.
"The Daniels family is deeply disappointed and feels profoundly disrespected by LSU's decision to give Jayden's number to another player," Daniels' spokesperson said. "Jayden and his family had every reason to believe that his number would remain a meaningful part of his LSU legacy and would be honored and protected in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the university."

According to Matt Moscana of LouisianaSports.net, Daniels and his camp have also asked LSU to return their copy of his Heisman Trophy.
"Daniels’s camp also requested LSU return its copy of the Heisman Trophy Daniels won in 2023, sources confirmed," Moscona wrote. "LSU has no intention of doing so and is undecided to what degree it will comply with the cease and desist, noting it is not a legally binding document."
Disappointing situation for LSU.
Although he never won a national title at LSU, Daniels' 2023 season was truly special. He had 3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards and 50 total touchdowns en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.
Daniels should be considered a fan favorite in Baton Rouge for years to come, but this situation has soured the public's opinion of him.
"Jayden Daniel’s PR has been burned to the ground the past 24 hours bro every account is dunking on him," one person said.
"Jayden Daniels might actually have the worst PR team to ever exist," a second fan declared.
"Jayden Daniels did a speedrun of ruining his rep everywhere," another fan commented.
As of now, Daniels hasn't released a statement or addressed his relationship with LSU. It's very possible the former No. 2 pick lets his legal team do the talking.
