Brian Flores is in his fourth season as defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings and he has his unit at or near the top of the charts in all the significant defensive statistical categories. The Vikings rank first in fewest points allowed, and that’s the biggest reason the Vikings are undefeated at 5-0 and holding a two-game lead in the NFC North over their three division rivals.
Flores believes the reason he is a defensive coordinator with the Vikings and not a head coach in the NFL is because of the systematic racism that African-American coaches face on a regular basis throughout the NFL. Flores was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019 through 2021 before he was fired by that organization.
The release of a memo by the Korn Ferry recruiting firm Tuesday adds fuel to Flores’ contention and his lawsuit against the NFL alleging racial discrimination.
The memo included a summary of Flores’ strengths and weaknesses and it was submitted to the Las Vegas Raiders. That team did not interview Flores for a head coaching position.
Some of the assessments of Flores included that he needed a strong boss to “reign (sic) in some of his worst behavior.” Another statement in the document quoted a senior executive as saying, “He may have changed since, but he was the worst hiring decision we’ve ever made.”
Flores’ lawyers claimed the release of the memo reveals that the coach’s decision to sue the league has been met with “unlawful retaliation” and that there is “continued discrimination” in the hiring process for NFL head coaches.
Flores continues to drive the Vikings defense and that unit has performed quite well throughout his tenure with the team, and the current season appears to be his best. The release of the Korn Ferry memo may indicate that there is additional evidence that could impact Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL.
