Paige Bueckers left many in awe following her performance in the USA’s first game of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The star guard and Team USA defeated China to start their title defense on a high note.
A lighthearted moment involving the Dallas Wings star during the matchup drew attention online, prompting a request from FIBA.
Bueckers had an exchange with Zhang Ziyu of China. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year appeared amused by their height difference. Bueckers, who stands 6 feet, looked small standing next to the 7-foot-3 center. The Wings guard gestured with her hand as if to emphasize the significant height difference.
FIBA posted three photos, including a cartoon version of them, and asked Bueckers to share what they discussed.
“Paige, spill the conversation pls 😭😂,” FIBA wrote.
Bueckers finished with 14 points, four assists and two steals in the 94-61 win. Caitlin Clark and Rhyne Howard also recorded 14 points each, while Jackie Young chipped in 12.
All Team USA players scored, showcasing their dominance and sending a strong message to the rest of the competition. Ziyu and Xinyu Luo led China with 13 points and six rebounds each.
Bueckers and Co. will return to action on Sunday to take on Italy before wrapping up their group-round schedule against the Czech Republic on Monday.
Team USA has its sights set on winning its fifth consecutive world championship, with the UConn product playing a significant role. Bueckers was named as one of the pre-tournament MVP favorites, along with teammates Clark and Breanna Stewart.
The Americans are heavy favorites to win the tournament, especially with their star-studded lineup.
