Angel Reese has been an integral part of Team USA through the start of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The Americans are now 2-0 in Group D after defeating China and Italy. After blowing out China in their tournament opener, Reese and Co. escaped with a close 55-52 win over the Italians on Sunday. The Atlanta Dream star had eight points, three rebounds, one steal and two blocks in 15 minutes.
Jackie Young led the way with 10 points. Paige Bueckers chipped in seven points while Napheesa Collier, Kahleah Copper and Aliyah Boston had six points each.
Reese is averaging 6.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in less than 20 minutes a game for Team USA.
Reese is known for her exceptional rebounding skills. However, fans have continuously trolled her for supposedly padding her stats by grabbing the rebounds off her own missed shots. Naysayers coined the term “mebounds” to mock Reese, but she flipped the script by trademarking the word. She has since launched a successful “mebounds” merchandise line.
On Sunday, FIBA posted a highlight of one of Reese’s big rebounds from their game against China. The world’s governing body for basketball also revealed a new nickname for the Dream star, along with a trademark request.
“Angel R’ee’bounds ™️ Trademark that too @Reese10Angel 🫢,” the caption said.
Team USA will face the Czech Republic on Monday to close out their Group D games. They have already secured an outright quarterfinals berth after winning their first two games.
The Americans have captured the last four FIBA Women’s World Cup titles. They aim to defend their crown and secure a fifth consecutive gold medal.
