Paige Bueckers has won her first-ever FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup gold medal as part of Team USA’s senior national team.
The Dallas Wings star played a key role as the squad went a perfect 6-0 in the tournament. In six games, Bueckers averaged 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals.
The 6-foot guard is primarily known as an elite offensive player. However, she made the necessary adjustments to complement her teammates and contribute however she could. Bueckers stepped up on defense and was even considered one of the tournament’s best defensive players.
After Team USA’s win, Bueckers was seen hugging her teammates as they celebrated their gold medal. FIBA shared this heartfelt moment on its Instagram account, along with a request.
“Good morning, World Champion Paige. Can we get a hug too? 🥹🫂 #FIBAWWC,” the Instagram post read.
Bueckers was photographed hugging Angel Reese, Kahleah Copper and World Cup MVP Breanna Stewart. These endearing moments highlighted the bond Bueckers built with her teammates throughout the tournament.
Bueckers will now return to Dallas with a gold medal as a world champion. Her experience could prove pivotal as she prepares for the remaining four games of the regular season.
The Wings will host the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday as they look to finish the season strong. They are currently 24-16 and eighth in the WNBA standings.
Bueckers and Co. have already secured their playoff spot, marking their first postseason appearance in three years. However, they can still improve on their seed heading into the playoffs. At the moment, only two games separate the Wings from the fourth-seeded Atlanta Dream.
