Fever Star Caitlin Clark Is Inching Closer To WNBA Suspension

With more than half the season remaining, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is in serious jeopardy of receiving an automatic suspension.

Clark is having yet another productive season with the Fever, averaging 21.3 points and 8.2 assists per game. Unfortunately, she's been racking up technical fouls this year. On Monday night, she was assessed her fifth technical for a chippy interaction with Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner.

It appears Bonner had words for Clark after being fouled in the fourth quarter. After the whistle was blown, Clark clapped her hands in Bonner's direction. The refs assigned to the Fever-Mercury game thought that gesture was bad enough to warrant a technical foul.

“It’s ridiculous, I got a technical for clapping,” Clark told reporters after the Fever's 86-77 win. “We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game I’m going to be suspended for if I’m going to get technicals for clapping.”

WNBA players receive an automatic one-game suspension once they receive their eighth technical foul of the season. Well, Clark is only three more techs away from hitting that mark.

For now, Clark is expected to receive a $1,000 fine and a warning for picking up her fifth technical foul.

The WNBA doubles down on Clark's technical foul.

According to James Boyd of The Athletic, the WNBA is not expected to rescind Clark's technical foul from Monday night.

"The Fever say they’re still appealing Caitlin Clark’s technical foul from Monday night but they have not heard back from the WNBA," Boyd wrote. "Again, I was told by the league that the technical foul was not rescinded."

It'll be interesting to see how the refs treat Clark during this Wednesday's rematch between the Fever and Mercury.
