The Indiana Fever didn’t have a game Thursday night, and yet, Sophie Cunningham still managed to go viral.
With the 2026 WNBA season well past the halfway point, the Fever have ramped up their efforts to get Cunningham the Sixth Player of the Year award. The veteran guard is averaging 8.4 points per game on a career-high 47.6% shooting from the field.
On Thursday night, the Fever posted this message on social media: “Sophie Cunningham for 6th Player of the Year.” It didn’t take long for this post to receive over a million views and a handful of angry responses.

“Yea that team is very unserious,” one fan commented.
“We gotta do something about the Indiana Fever, I’ve seen enough,” a second fan replied. “Shrink the WNBA.”
“When you gave 3 all stars on a team is hard for Sophie to get the ball and actually get some stats. But she still contributes and she the 4th best scorer on the team,” another fan argued. “Plus a leader on the court. Irreplaceable for this team.”
“I honestly feel bad because there are at least two Valkyries who statistically make more sense to be 6POTY,” another fan declared.
Will Sophie Cunningham win the award?
As of this moment, Janelle Salan of the Golden State Valkyries is considered the favorite to win Sixth Player of the Year. She’s averaging 12.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Make no mistake though, Cunningham is in the mix for this award. Not only has she been efficient from the 3-point line, she has given Indiana’s offense a true spark at times.
That being said, Cunningham’s struggles in August have most likely hurt her chances of taking home the hardware.
