The Indiana Fever aren’t going to let Caitlin Clark’s critics fire off takes without at least receiving some pushback.
Less than 48 hours after the Fever’s season ended to the Las Vegas Aces, general manager Amber Cox spoke to the media about the team’s outlook heading into the offseason. The Fever have to figure out if they’re retaining a few key free agents, including All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell and Sophie Cunningham.
Cox also addressed any skepticism surrounding Clark and her status as the face of the WNBA. She not only referred to the former No. 1 pick as the “tipping point” for the league’s ratings, she said more people need to thank her.
“Caitlin remains the tipping point. You look at the ratings, you look at the full buildings — that started in 2024 when she came into the league. That is because of Caitlin Clark. That does not take anything away from anyone who’s come before her, or still playing, or has worked in the league … the build was slow, and then Caitlin Clark arrived, and the floodgates opened,” Cox told reporters Saturday.
“She deserves her flowers. We need to say it more often, and I’m going to say it every time you put a mic in front of my face: thank you to Caitlin Clark.”
Already preparing for Year 4.
Clark had an excellent 2026 season, averaging 22.3 points and 8.3 assists per game. She really elevated her game towards the second half of the season.
After Game 3 of the Fever-Aces series ended, Clark immediately shifted her focus over to the 2027 season.
“I was able to come out here and put together the best season I’ve had and perform at a really high level and basically get better in every area and still feel like I have so many areas to improve,” Clark said. “So, I guess that’s the most exciting part moving forward. I love the work. I love being in the gym. So, I’ll probably be kicked out for a little while, but we’ll get back to it.”
If Clark takes yet another leap in her development, the Fever should be considered title contenders.
