No position gives rookies a better chance to matter in fantasy football than running back, but even then, there is a big difference between useful and historic. The seasons on this list came from backs who handled heavy workloads and turned them into huge rushing totals, strong receiving output, and enough touchdowns to climb into rare territory.
Here are the five best rookie RB seasons in PPR fantasy football history, plus a few honorable mentions.
Honorable Mentions
- RB Herschel Walker, Dallas Cowboys (1986): 317.4 fantasy points
- RB Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints (2017): 320.4 fantasy points
- RB Clinton Portis, Denver Broncos (2002): 322.2 fantasy points
The 5 Best Fantasy Seasons Ever Recorded by a Rookie RB
5) RB Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys (2016): 325.4 fantasy points
Missing one game kept Elliott from climbing even higher. Even so, 1,631 rushing yards, 15 rushing scores, and enough receiving work to push past 325 PPR points made this one of the best rookie RB seasons ever.
4) RB Billy Sims, Detroit Lions (1980): 339.4 fantasy points
Long before dual-threat backs became the fantasy ideal, Sims was already doing it. His rookie line included 1,303 rushing yards, 621 receiving yards, and 16 total touchdowns in as many games played.
3) RB Edgerrin James, Indianapolis Colts (1999): 377.9 fantasy points
Few rookie backs have checked every box the way James did over his debut season. He cleared 1,500 rushing yards, caught 62 passes, and finished with 17 total touchdowns in a performance that was strong across the board.
2) RB Saquon Barkley, New York Giants (2018): 385.8 fantasy points
In full PPR, the receiving work is what turns Barkley’s debut into an all-time monster effort. He paired 1,307 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns with 91 catches, 721 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns.
1) RB Eric Dickerson, Los Angeles Rams (1983): 392.2 fantasy points
This is still the gold standard for rookie running backs. Dickerson ran for 1,808 yards and 18 touchdowns, then added 51 catches, 404 receiving yards, and two more scores through the air. He'd go on to set the NFL single-season rushing mark with 2,105 the next year and still holds the all-time record for most rushing yards in a two-year span.
