Rookie quarterbacks do not usually walk into the NFL and deliver league-winning fantasy football production. The best first-year seasons at the position tend to come from passers who combine high-end passing efficiency with enough rushing success to separate from the pack.
Here are the five best rookie QB seasons in PPR fantasy football history, along with three honorable mentions. The path was not the same in every case, but each season produced the kind of immediate fantasy return that rookie quarterbacks almost never provide.
Honorable Mentions
- QB Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys (2016): 290.9 fantasy points
- QB Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (2012): 294.5 fantasy points
- QB Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals (2019): 297.3 fantasy points
The 5 Best Fantasy Seasons Ever Recorded by a Rookie QB
5) QB Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins (2012): 322.5 fantasy points
Before injuries changed his career trajectory, Griffin delivered one of the most efficient rookie QB seasons ever. He threw for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions, but it was his 815 rushing yards and seven ground scores that elevated him to a different tier of rookies.
4) QB Bo Nix, Denver Broncos (2024): 329.2 fantasy points
Seventeen games helped, but the production holds up either way. Nix finished his first season with 3,775 yards and 29 passing touchdowns, giving him a higher rookie fantasy total than several more celebrated first-year quarterbacks. His 34 total scores, including a receiving TD, rank third-most by an NFL rookie.
3) QB Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers (2020): 342.8 fantasy points
Volume drove Herbert into the top three, but he also scored five rushing TDs to bolster his case. He piled up 4,336 passing yards and 31 touchdown passes in only 15 games, which is a ridiculous rookie pace by any standard. No rookie has accounted for more offensive scores than his 36.
2) QB Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders (2024): 364.8 fantasy points
Efficiency is what pushes Daniels this high. A 69.0% completion rate with 3,568 passing yards and 25 touchdown throws gave him one of the strongest rookie fantasy seasons any quarterback has produced. Much like RG3 years before him, Daniels' explosive ground game truly separated him from the pack.
1) QB Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (2011): 387.3 fantasy points
Rookie quarterbacks are not supposed to clear 4,000 passing yards and still finish this high in fantasy. Newton threw for 4,051 yards and 21 passing touchdowns, and his debut season still sits at the top of the rookie QB board after scoring an all-time record 14 rushing TDs.
