We’re reaching trade season, when NBA rosters do their shuffling ahead of the 2026-27. And for some players, one offseason move could lead to a breakout year.

Crowded rosters and imposing superstars can stand between a player being a so-so contributor and a high-ceiling fantasy asset. All it takes is one offseason trade to shuffle the deck and set the stage for a big season.

Which players are one trade away from unleashing their breakout potential?

Why These Trades Matter for Fantasy

Jalen Johnson’s breakout illustrates how expanded opportunity can reshape fantasy ceilings.

It’s simple: Trades leave the door open for role expansion and usage spikes.

Take Jalen Johnson, for example. The forward’s role expanded when the Hawks traded away Trae Young, and Johnson responded with a career season that included 49 double-doubles and 13 triple-doubles. His fantasy value followed suit, and he became a multi-cat fantasy asset for points, rebounds, assists, and shooting efficiency.

For other players, they need to be traded themselves to get more opportunities. This was the case for Bennedict Mathurin, who became a major offensive asset after being traded from the Pacers to the Clippers. He also upped his fantasy value thanks to posting 17-plus points and 5-plus rebounds per night.

Players Most Dependent on a Trade to Break Out

Miles McBride remains a speculative fantasy target pending roster movement.

Miles McBride

The Knicks’ roster is fueled by its deep backcourt rotation. But it’s crowded and reliant on a special division of usage that relegates McBride to a bench role. And while New York likes having his two-way abilities at its disposal, the young 3-and-D specialist could break out if he played more minutes.

The Knicks aren’t expected to move their core this summer, but are still expected to test the market. One trade could be all McBride needs to get more playing time and opportunities.

Jaylen Wells

When Wells played 30-plus minutes per game for the volatile Grizzlies last season, he posted double-digit points while contributing rebounds and assists. When he played less than that, his efficiency waned and the scoring was inconsistent.

But Memphis is expected to be busy this offseason trying to offload Ja Morant. That move would open the door for Wells to grow his game and produce more, especially if he can play more alongside fellow Washington State alum Cedric Coward.

Tari Eason

Houston’s Kevin Durant-led frontcourt is mighty crowded, which kept Eason playing just 25.8 minutes per night during the regular season. He flashed double-double potential during the playoffs when Durant was sidelined, signaling he could get more playing time in a different scheme.

The Rockets want to retain the pending restricted free agent, but his market value should lead to some competitive offers from other teams.

Austin Reaves

This one’s a bit tricky, for a couple of reasons. Reaves already averages big minutes for the Lakers, although injuries have kept him from completely expanding his repertoire. If LeBron James leaves Los Angeles this offseason, Reaves would have the perfect platform to truly break out for the Lakers.

Here’s the problem with that: Reaves is expected to seek a max deal from the Lakers as he becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. And now, L.A. is reportedly considering parting ways with him. Would a change of scenery unlock more fantasy value for Reaves, or could he end up on a congested roster? This is something fantasy managers will want to watch for.

The Bottom Line for 2026-27 Fantasy Basketball

Trade scenarios can unlock breakout fantasy potential for these players, so managers need to pay close attention.

Keep an eye on roster shuffling as the NBA Draft and free agency get underway. Did a trade leave a starting spot open for the taking? Will a change of scenery lead to more minutes and usage? Fantasy owners who roster these potential breakouts first could gain an early advantage when the 2026-27 fantasy season starts.

Questions About How Trades Impact Fantasy Basketball

Which 2026-27 fantasy basketball players are waiting on the right trade?
Miles McBride, Jaylen Wells, Tari Eason, and Austin Reaves are highlighted as players whose fantasy value could rise significantly with the right roster move.

How can onetrade dramatically change a player’s fantasy value?
A trade can create additional minutes, usage, offensive responsibility, or a larger rotational role that boosts fantasy production.

When should I draft or trade for these players?
Target these players when market cost remains low and continue monitoring offseason movement before committing heavily.

Are there risks with chasing trade-dependent players?
Yes. If trades do not happen—or lead to less favorable situations—projected role growth and fantasy upside may not materialize.

How do I monitor these trade situations during the offseason?
Track NBA Draft outcomes, free agency activity, roster construction, and preseason rotation trends for early indicators.

Which fantasy formats are most affected by these players?
Managers in category leagues and deeper roster formats often benefit most from identifying role-based breakout opportunities early.
