Fantasy basketball managers make the same mistake every summer, lumping every free-agent situation together.
Well, here's some advice on that: Don't.
Not every uncertain player carries the same type of risk.
Some players simply need a new address. Others already have one but don't yet know their role. And then there are the situations where one superstar's decision changes everything for half the league.
I tend to put every free-agent situation into one of three buckets.
Once you know which bucket a player belongs in, figuring out his fantasy value becomes a whole lot easier.
Free agency is unpredictable. Your draft board doesn't have to be.

Destination, Role and Domino Effect
Let's start with the easiest one.
Bucket No. 1: Destination uncertainty.
This is exactly what it sounds like. The player is leaving, or at least expected to leave. We just don't know where he's going.
Think about Miami guard Norman Powell.
Nobody questions whether he can score. The question is where he'll be scoring.
A starting job with a team desperate for offense? That's one fantasy projection.
A contender where he's the sixth man? That's another entirely.
The same thing applies to several unrestricted free agents every summer.
The talent hasn't changed. The zip code has.
Then there's Bucket No. 2: Role uncertainty.
This one's a little trickier. Trae Young fits here.
We know where he's playing (Washington). So the uncertainty isn't the destination.
It's everything around it.
How much will AJ Dybantsa handle the ball? Will Anthony Davis stay healthy? Who becomes the third scoring option?
Those answers matter just as much as Young's address.
We've already examined players with the biggest fantasy value swings this offseason, and role uncertainty is usually a major reason why.
Finally, there's Bucket No. 3: The domino effect.
This is my favorite one because it's also the hardest to predict. Sometimes a player's fantasy value depends on somebody else's decision.
That's exactly what happened with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Once he was traded to Miami, fantasy values shifted across two franchises almost immediately.
Tyler Herro suddenly became Milwaukee's offensive centerpiece. Bam Adebayo's fantasy outlook changed. Miami's pursuit of additional shooters became far more important.
One transaction. Dozens of fantasy consequences. That's the domino effect.

Free Agents Looking for the Right Fit
Fantasy managers sometimes panic when a player hits free agency.
I usually don't. If I already know the player can produce, I simply start asking where that production makes the most sense.
Quentin Grimes is a good example. Every time Grimes gets meaningful minutes, he produces.
If he signs somewhere that plans to start him, his fantasy value rises.
Anfernee Simons falls into a similar category. Scorers tend to keep scoring. The only real question is usage.
This is also why I don't overreact to free agency rumors.
Rumors don't win fantasy leagues. Roles do.
That's why I'd rather wait for a realistic landing spot than chase every report that pops up on social media.
Role Uncertainty Takes Longer

The Situation Matters More Than the Player
Role uncertainty is where fantasy managers usually get themselves into trouble.
The player hasn't changed. The environment has.
Washington is probably the best current example. Trae Young is still one of the NBA's premier playmakers. But fantasy managers also need to figure out how Dybantsa fits.
How Anthony Davis fits. How everyone else fits. That's a much tougher projection than simply saying, "Trae plays for the Wizards."
Golden State also belongs here. Stephen Curry isn't going anywhere.
The Warriors' supporting cast? That's another story.
Who returns? Who leaves? Who earns the extra minutes?
As we've discussed when looking at teams with the most fantasy value at stake this summer, those answers often determine who becomes a fantasy sleeper.
The Domino Effect Is Where Championships Are Won
Don't Just Follow the Star. Follow Everyone Around Him.
Here's something I've learned covering the NBA: The biggest trade doesn't always create the biggest fantasy winner.
Sometimes it's Player No. 3. Or Player No. 5.
Giannis to Miami is the perfect example. Everybody immediately focused on Giannis.
Reasonable enough.
But Tyler Herro may have become an even bigger fantasy story because he'll now have every opportunity to be Milwaukee's featured scorer.
Bam Adebayo's role changed overnight. The Heat's need for shooting became much greater.
That's why I always tell fantasy managers to follow the ripple effects.
The headline is only the beginning. The fantasy value usually shows up a few steps later.
Time To Start Your Bucket List
Every uncertain player doesn't deserve the same fantasy discount. That's probably the biggest lesson here.
Ask yourself one question: Which bucket does he belong in?
Is he simply looking for a new team? Is his role still being defined? Or is his fantasy outlook tied to someone else's move?
Once you answer that, the draft board usually becomes much easier to sort through.
After all, free agency isn't just about following the news. It's about understanding what the news actually means for fantasy basketball.
