Fantasy managers spend a lot of time watching players. Sometimes they're watching the wrong thing.
This time of year, I'd rather watch events.
One trade. One free-agent signing. One unexpected injury. One coaching decision. Any one of those can completely change a frontcourt rotation overnight.
That's especially true for big men, where one roster move often creates 30 minutes for somebody else.
Here are a few frontcourt players I'd be watching as the offseason continues.
Alex Sarr, Wizards
His Opportunity Depends on Everyone Around Him
Alex Sarr remains one of the more fascinating young big men in fantasy basketball. Not because we don't know if he can play. Because we still don't know exactly what Washington wants to become.
The Wizards now have Trae Young running the offense. Anthony Davis is expected back. They also drafted AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick.
That's a lot of talent. It's also a lot of mouths to feed.
If Davis misses time, Sarr's fantasy ceiling jumps almost immediately. If Washington leans heavily into its younger core later in the season, Sarr could become one of the biggest second-half risers in fantasy basketball.
Talent has never really been the question. Timing has.

One Trade Could Unlock Everything
The Pelicans may be the toughest team in the league to project.
Zion Williamson continues to surface in trade rumors. Trey Murphy III has drawn interest. Herbert Jones has, too. Every move New Orleans makes changes somebody else's fantasy outlook.
Missi could be the biggest beneficiary.
If the Pelicans move one or two veterans and fully embrace a younger rotation, Missi suddenly becomes much more than a late-round flier. He's the type of player I'd rather draft a round too early than a round too late.

Denver Still Has Decisions to Make
Peyton Watson has flashed enough over the past couple of seasons to make fantasy managers pay attention.
Now comes the important part. Finding consistent minutes.
Denver's frontcourt remains one of the more interesting situations in the Western Conference.
A trade. A free-agent departure. Or simply a coaching decision to expand Watson's role.
Any one of those could make him considerably more valuable than his current draft position suggests.
That's why he's firmly on my watch list.

The Starting Job Still Matters
Sometimes fantasy value isn't complicated. Sometimes it's all about minutes.
Okongwu has shown he can produce whenever he's given extended opportunities.
So the question has never really been talent. It's opportunity.
If Atlanta finishes the offseason without adding another significant frontcourt player, Okongwu becomes much easier to trust on draft day.
If the Hawks add another veteran big? Now we're having a different conversation.
That's why I wouldn't rush to rank him just yet. I'd wait to see what Atlanta does in July.

Young Big Men Usually Need Patience ... Until They Don't
Rookies are always difficult to project. Big men even more so.
But Cameron Boozer enters a Memphis organization that's clearly entering a different phase.
For starters, the Grizzlies continue exploring the trade market for Ja Morant.
If additional veterans eventually move, Memphis could decide to accelerate Boozer's development. That's where fantasy managers need to stay alert.
A rebuilding team has far more incentive to live with rookie mistakes than a contender does. Opportunity often arrives faster than expected.
Watch the Event, Not the Player
Fantasy managers usually react after the news. I'd rather react before it.
If a team is clearly shopping a veteran, I'm already looking at his backup. If a free agent is expected to leave, I'm studying who inherits those minutes. If a rebuilding team starts moving established players, I'm looking at the young guys before everyone else does.
That's especially true with frontcourt players.
Minutes create rebounds. Rebounds create fantasy value. And one offseason transaction can suddenly create both.
But If You Must, Here Are Some Key Players To Watch
The biggest fantasy breakout isn't always the player who improves the most. Sometimes it's simply the player whose circumstances improve the fastest.
That's why I'll continue watching Alex Sarr, Yves Missi, Peyton Watson, Onyeka Okongwu, and yes, Cameron Boozer.
Not because they've already become fantasy steals. Because they're each one event away from becoming one.
Sometimes the smartest fantasy managers aren't the ones who predict the player. They're the ones who predict the opportunity.
