I’m going work hard to remain composed as I write about Manny Machado’s disastrous start to the 2026 season, but it might not be easy since his disappointing early season numbers are directly hurting my TGFBI (The Great Fantasy Baseball Invitational) fantasy baseball team. Machado has gotten off to slow starts in the past, but he’s bounced back before and he’s been one of the most consistent fantasy baseball third basemen over the past several seasons. However, Machado is approaching his mid-30s and with some of his early season power metrics showing major regression, can we still expect him to turn his season around?

Breaking Down Manny Machado’s Brutal 2026 Start

Manny Machado’s split profile underscores unusual production against right-handed pitching.

David Frerker-Imagn Images

Machado’s .178/.272/.331 triple slash in his first 47 games is a far cry from his career .276/.336/.483 slash line. To put Machado’s slow start into perspective, he’s on pace to hit 24 HR and drive in 76 runs based on his current 162-game average. For his career, Machado averages 31 HR and 97 RBI per 162 games played.

One other area of note related to Machado’s slow start to the 2026 season is the fact that he’s been far less productive against left-handed pitching compared to right-handed pitching. His struggles against southpaws are unusual based on his career statistics.

The Bigger Picture – Injury History and Age Curve

Manny Machado’s durability history offers optimism despite age-related regression concerns.

David Frerker-Imagn Images

Machado will be 34 years old on July 6 and is approaching a period in his career when many fantasy baseball players experience a gradual natural regression in their skillset and ability to play the game at a high level.

To his credit, despite dealing with some minor lower-body issues, Machado has played 47 of the Padres’ first 49 games and has been relatively injury free of late. He hasn’t been on the IL since 2023 and has played at least 150 games in four of the last five seasons. Machado’s bat speed has slightly regressed this season compared to last, but it is still above league average.

Why the Slump Feels Familiar

For those fantasy baseball managers, like me, who are panicking over Machado’s slow start, let’s keep in mind that this isn’t the first time that he’s slumped to start the season.

Through his first 48 games of the 2024 season Machado had a .230 BA, 5 HR and a .641 OPS. He then batted .296 with 24 HR and an .871 OPS in his last 104 games of that season.

Machado batted .222, hit 5 HR and had a .628 OPS in his first 43 games of the 2023 season. In his last 95 games of that season, he batted .274, hit 25 HR and had an .850 OPS.

Fantasy Strategy — Absorb It or Take Advantage?

Manny Machado’s depressed trade value creates potential buying opportunities.

David Frerker-Imagn Images

Per his consensus preseason ADP Machado was the fourth fantasy baseball third baseman off the board in drafts. I drafted him in my TGFBI league based on his pedigree and the presumption that he would provide consistency at a shallow fantasy baseball position. Call me optimistic, and maybe a bit hopeful, but based on his career statistics and recent history of breaking out of prolonged slumps, I believe better days are ahead for Machado.

Hold, Buy Low, or Sell High Decisions

Machado appears to be a good buy-low option, and you should probably try to pry him away from an overreacting fantasy baseball league mate.

On the other hand, if you don’t believe that he can bounce back and want to trade him, you’ll have to be crafty because his value is probably the lowest it’s been in years. A recent trade in a Yahoo! fantasy baseball league had Machado being exchanged straight up for Phillies SP Jesús Luzardo. Another had Machado being traded for Mariners SP George Kirby.

The league in which I roster Machado doesn’t allow trading, so I’ll hang on to him and wait for the rebound. Call me a fool but I believe him when Machado says he’s working on his process, but frankly I don’t have much of a choice.

Questions About Manny Machado, Answered

Why is Manny Machado off to such a brutal start in 2026?
Machado’s slow start has been driven by poor surface production and weaker underlying power indicators, including declines in average exit velocity, hard-hit rate, and barrel percentage compared to last season.

Is Manny Machado’s slump likely to continue or regress positively?
His expected statistics remain better than his current traditional numbers, but they still sit below career norms. His previous seasons included similarly slow starts followed by stronger production.

Should fantasy managers hold, buy low, or sell Manny Machado?
Machado profiles as a buy-low option if another manager is overreacting to the slump, while managers looking to trade him may need to accept reduced market value.

What is a realistic rest-of-season projection for Machado in 2026?
Based on his current pace, Machado projects to finish around 24 home runs and 76 RBI over a full season.

How does Machado’s recent injury history affect his fantasy value?
Despite recent lower-body issues, Machado has remained available, avoided the injured list since 2023, and continued playing regularly.
