Some fans are coming to the defense of Sophie Cunningham’s supportes for not knowing anything about the WNBA.
Sportico interviewed people on both sides of the transgender athletes demonstration outside of the Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty game at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday evening. Many of the pro-Sophie Cunningham, anti-transgender athlete demonstrators could not name five WNBA players.
“I can name Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark, that’s all I’ve got,” one Cunningham supporter said.
“No I cannot, I’m sorry,” another Cunningham supporter said.
“I sure can,” one Cunningham supporter said. “Sophie Cunningham, uh, it’s always fun…Caitlin Clark, Reese, A’ja (Wilson)…I said Caitlin Clark.”
“Probably not, no. I could name Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark, that’s it.”

The video from Sportico quickly went viral on social media, getting millions of views across X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
Fans defend Sophie Cunningham supporters for lack of knowledge
“So that’s there way of attracting new fans, making fun of them for not being experts??? Not a good move,” one fan wrote.
“And? They’re still 100% correct on the transgender issue,” one fan added.
“Sophie’s supporters know the important thing: that allowing trans athletes would be bad for the WNBA and women’s sports in general,” one fan added.
“It’s not about naming or even being a fan of WNBA.its about basic science. Men don’t belong in women’s sports, period,” one fan added.
Cunningham, meanwhile, continues to boast about her influence on the WNBA’s fan base.
“You have a lot of new fans, not only just watching, but coming to games and seeing the environment and seeing the talent,” Cunningham said per the Associated Press. “I think anytime you can get more eyes on the W, that’s an awesome thing, because then that inspires other young kids that maybe have never seen the game or heard about the game or been to a game, they get that experience. So I definitely think that it’s been a very positive thing.”
