Fans Declare Sophie Cunningham's WNBA Career Is Over After Playoff Loss

Even though Sophie Cunningham hasn’t said anything about leaving the WNBA, some fans are convinced we’ve seen the last of her on the hardwood.

Cunningham, 30, had a productive 2026 season with the Indiana Fever, averaging 7.9 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the 3-point line. Although she was a valuable asset off the bench for Stephanie White’s squad, fans thought she caused too many distractions.

For starters, Cunningham dominated the headlines in July for sharing her thoughts on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Her take on “protect young girls in a locker room” led to her receiving a ton of backlash both online and at WNBA arenas.

Prior to Game 3 between the Fever and Aces, Cunningham went viral for taking a jab at A’ja Wilson on TikTok. That move backfired in a major way, as Wilson dropped 36 points in a series-clinching win Thursday night.

Cunningham, meanwhile, finished Game 3 with five points. The Fever were -18 when she was on the floor. Once the final whistle was blown, WNBA fans made sure to point out her struggles.

“Sophie Cunningham just played her last game as a WNBA player,” one fan wrote on X.

“Sophie Cunningham is probably done after this. I don’t see her getting picked up again, especially because of the negative PR. She’ll probably concentrate on her podcast,” a second fan commented.

“Sophie Cunningham yeah you need to look for a new career,” another fan wrote.

What’s next for Cunningham?

As of this moment, Cunningham seems determined to keep playing in the WNBA. She should have suitors considering she’s an efficient 3-point shooter.

That being said, former ESPN writer Chuck Klosterman believes Cunningham will eventually run for Vice President of the United States.

“Sophie Cunningham … I’m going to say 2050, is going to be Vice President of the United States,” Klosterman said. “I don’t know what party she’ll be in, I don’t know anything about her political views. But she will be the vice presidential candidate, at least the candidate.”

We’re not sure what’s next for Cunningham, but fans will be paying close attention to every move she makes.
