A fan has died from a horrible fall at a 2026 World Cup stadium.
The soccer fan died after falling from a VIP section at Mexico City’s Banorte Stadium this weekend. The soccer fan fell right before a match between Mexico and Portugal was scheduled to begin, PEOPLE reports.
The fan reportedly fell from a staging area into the stadium parking lot, according to the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office. According to reports, the fan was believed to be intoxicated. He allegedly attempted to jump from second-level box seats to the first level before falling to the ground.
Officials released a statement on Facebook.
“According to the first reports, the events were recorded in the building’s staging area, from where the person fell to the parking area, causing the loss of his life,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Facebook.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
The stadium, which is set to host the 2026 World Cup opening ceremonies, is an 87,000-seat venue that recently completed a $105 million renovation.
The stadium has previously hosted World Cup games in 1970 and 1986.
An autopsy is underway.
