Falcons Hit by Major Injury Scare After Jalon Walker Exits Practice

The Atlanta Falcons may have suffered a significant setback before the 2026 NFL season even begins. Edge rusher Jalon Walker is feared to have torn his ACL after leaving Tuesday's practice with a left leg injury.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Walker will undergo an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. The injury occurred on the final play of practice during a pass-rush rep, with Walker remaining on the ground before being carted off the field.

Rapoport shared the update on X, writing, "Falcons promising edge Jalon Walker is feared to have torn his ACL… a potential brutal injury for this defense." He added, "Walker will have an MRI to confirm the injury from practice today, which drew an emotional reaction from his team."

If the ACL tear is confirmed, Walker's second NFL season would end before it begins.

Walker entered training camp after an impressive rookie campaign in 2025. The former first-round pick recorded 36 tackles, 5.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery across 15 games. His 10.3 percent pressure rate ranked among the NFL's top rookie edge defenders, highlighting his rapid development.

The timing could hardly be worse for Atlanta. The Falcons reshaped the organization this offseason by hiring Kevin Stefanski as head coach and Matt Ryan as president of football operations. They also added veterans Samson Ebukam, Azeez Ojulari, Christian Harris, Cameron Thomas, and Da'Shawn Hand to strengthen the defense.

Walker's expected role was also expanding. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich planned to use him both as an edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker after Kaden Elliss departed in free agency.

Atlanta's defensive outlook now faces fresh uncertainty. James Pearce Jr. is also dealing with a potential league suspension, leaving the Falcons thin at one of their most important positions.

If Walker misses the season, the defense will rely heavily on veteran additions to replace his production while hoping its young core can overcome another difficult challenge.
