The Atlanta Falcons are adding defensive depth ahead of Week 7, signing edge defender Charles Snowden from the Washington Commanders’ practice squad to their active roster. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported the move Tuesday as Atlanta prepares to face the San Francisco 49ers.
Snowden, 6-foot-7, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Virginia. He began with the Chicago Bears before joining the Las Vegas Raiders, where he appeared in 31 games over two seasons and recorded 67 tackles, 11 quarterback hits and 4.5 sacks. Washington signed him to its practice squad in late September.
The addition gives Atlanta another option along the defensive front. Snowden can line up on the edge and use his length to challenge blockers, but his role will depend on how quickly he learns the system.
Atlanta’s defensive depth has faced scrutiny after linebacker Kendal Daniels suffered a neck injury during the team’s Week 6 game. The Falcons have not confirmed Snowden is a direct replacement, and the players do not necessarily fill identical roles. Still, another defender gives the coaching staff more options.
The timing matters with San Francisco next on the schedule. The 49ers can stress defenses with motion and attacks inside and outside. Atlanta will need disciplined edge play and reliable tackling to limit explosive gains.

Snowden’s NFL experience could help him adjust, although the signing does not guarantee an immediate starting role. He must learn the playbook and understand his assignments before earning consistent snaps.
For Atlanta, the move adds depth ahead of a difficult test. If Snowden contributes along the defensive front, he could help keep the rotation fresh as the Falcons try to remain competitive in the NFC South.
