Formula 1 heads to Spain this weekend for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, a race many teams regard as the ultimate benchmark of performance.

After the unique challenge of Monaco's narrow streets, the championship arrives at a circuit that traditionally exposes every strength and weakness in a car's package. With a mix of high-speed corners, long straights, and technical sectors, Barcelona has long been viewed as one of the most complete tests on the calendar. It also arrives at a pivotal moment in the 2026 title fight, with Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli looking to extend his remarkable winning streak and further strengthen his championship lead.

While the official race entry list remains unchanged, Friday's opening practice session will feature several notable driver swaps as teams fulfill Formula 1's mandatory rookie-running requirements. Seven teams will field alternate drivers during FP1, including Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Williams, Audi, and Cadillac.

Among the headline changes, Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic will replaceLewis Hamilton, while Mercedes reserve Frederik Vesti takes over Antonelli's car. McLaren development driver Leonardo Fornaroli will step into Lando Norris' machine, with Ayumu Iwasa replacing Isack Hadjar at Red Bull. Williams will hand Alex Albon's seat to Luke Browning, Audi will run Paul Aron in place of Nico Hulkenberg, and Cadillac test driver Colton Herta will make his highly anticipated FP1 debut in Sergio Perez's car.

The rookie-heavy session adds another layer of intrigue to a weekend that could prove significant in the championship battle. Barcelona is a circuit that teams often use to evaluate upgrades and gather crucial development data, making every minute of practice particularly valuable.
