Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix Sprint ended on a sour note after the Mercedes driver was handed a post-race time penalty that cost him two positions in the final standings.
Antonelli crossed the line in fourth place, ahead of teammate George Russell. However, a five-second time penalty was applied after the race, dropping the Italian teenager to sixth, behind both Russell and Max Verstappen.

The penalty was the result of repeated track limits violations during the Sprint race. Antonelli accumulated four infringements across the course of the race, with the final one coming on the last lap.
The black-and-white flag was shown to Antonelli on lap 12, serving as his final warning. Despite that warning, he picked up a fourth track limits violation on the final lap, triggering the five-second penalty that was applied to his finishing time after the checkered flag.
What It Means for the Championship
The timing of the penalty is significant. Antonelli heads into the Miami Grand Prix weekend as the youngest Drivers’ Championship leader in F1 history, and while Sprint points represent a smaller portion of the overall tally, every point counts at this stage of the season.

The demotion to sixth means the 19-year-old driver loses points he had appeared to secure on track, with the beneficiaries being Russell and Verstappen, who both move ahead of him in the Sprint classification as a result.
Mercedes will now be hoping the incident serves as a lesson ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix, where track limits management could prove just as important at the Miami International Autodrome.
Who Won the 2026 Miami GP Sprint Race?
McLaren delivered a dominant performance in the Miami Sprint, securing a one-two finish with Lando Norris leading Oscar Piastri across the line. Norris controlled the race from the front to take victory and claim the maximum eight points available in the Sprint format.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top three, collecting six points for the Scuderia. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes after the post-race penalty dropped Antonelli behind him, while Max Verstappen moved up to fifth place for Red Bull Racing.
Antonelli's five-second penalty resulted in three Sprint points instead of the five he would have taken for fourth place. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished seventh for Ferrari, adding two points, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly claimed the final point available for eighth place.
The result gives McLaren a major boost heading into Sunday’s Grand Prix, with Norris and Piastri showing strong pace around the Miami International Autodrome.
