The FIA brings another circuit-specific energy management measure to keep the new-generation cars under control on the Marina Bay street circuit as Formula 1 arrives in Singapore this weekend.

The decision comes after the FIA set stricter rules on the use of electrical power at Monaco, where the nature of the street circuit could lead to excessive speeds. The situation is similar in Singapore since the walls are closer, and the braking zones are tougher. The 2026 cars have a lot more electrical power to play with via the MGU-K.

The 2026 rules allow for a maximum of 350kW in the key acceleration and overtaking areas, and a maximum of 250kW in other areas. The FIA has also raised the number of races in which lower energy limits are permitted from eight to 12, providing the governing body with more flexibility in how the power is delivered to individual circuits.

FIA Prioritizes Safety as Title Fight Heats Up At Singapore GP

The restriction comes at a time when the bout has increasingly turned into a Mercedes affair.

Kimi Antonelli is in Singapore with an 84-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship over teammate George Russell, who retired from Malaysia late with a suspected power-unit failure. Antonelli is in first with 320 points, Russell is second with 236 points, and Lewis Hamilton is third with 214 points. Max Verstappen’s win in Malaysia pushed him up to 188 points, tied with Lando Norris.

Singapore is another big test for the top contenders as they prepare for the Sprint weekend. Antonelli has established a significant lead, but the race for the title is far from over as Russell and the pack of chasers still have plenty of races to go.

Constructors’ Championship Adds More Pressure

Mercedes also comes into Singapore with a huge lead in the Constructors’ Championship. The Silver Arrows are on 556 points, 151 points ahead of Ferrari on 405 points. McLaren is third with 316, and Red Bull is fourth with 298.

This is why energy management is especially crucial for Mercedes. The team has already faced questions about their most recent upgrade package, and Russell’s recent retirement has shown how fast things can turn.

For every team, the Singapore restriction will mean finding the right balance between speed and electrical deployment. The FIA’s ruling could be as significant to the weekend as car performance on a circuit where errors can be dealt with on the spot.
