ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday afternoon, opening up about a scary personal health issue.
Herbstreit, 57, told McAfee and Co. that he’ll be on blood thinners for life. The former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback told McAfee that he had a blood clot in his leg that became a pulmonary embolism. They got into his bloodstream and ended up in his lungs. He’ll be on blood thinners for life.
“I had a calf injury that ended up being a pulmonary embolism..The blood clots left my calf and got into my bloodstream…,” he told McAfee.
“They went thru my heart & ended up in my lungs..I’ve been on blood thinners ever since & I’ll be on them for the rest of my life.”
Herbstreit’s reveal comes in response to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts announcing that he has a superficial blood clot that will keep him out of games for an indefinite period of time this NFL season.
Eagles’ statement on Jalen Hurts’ situation
“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report.
“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.
“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter.
“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”
A superficial blood clot, otherwise known as Superficial Thrombophlebitis, is a blood clot that occurs in veins under the skin (superficial veins).
“The condition typically happens in the arms or legs and causes inflammation, pain, redness and swelling. Healthcare providers treat pain and swelling with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,” the Cleveland Clinic shares.
The Eagles, 2-3 on the season, will be taking on the Panthers on Sunday.
