ESPN Reveals Where UConn, Dan Hurley Rank After March Madness Update

NCAA Basketball: Providence at Connecticut

Dan Hurley, the head coach of the UConn Huskies, is one of the most polarizing figures in college basketball.

Hurley has done an outstanding job revitalizing the program, leading his team to the Sweet 16, where they have a chance to win their third national championship in four seasons. The Huskies have a record of 31-5 this year and were on track to potentially secure a No. 1 seed in the tournament before suffering two late-season losses. As a result, they were placed on the No. 2 seed line instead.

They have begun tournament play with impressive double-digit victories against Furman and the UCLA Bruins. This week, they will face the No. 3 seed, the Michigan State Spartans. Before the upcoming games, ESPN's Myron Medcalf ranked the remaining 16 teams, placing UConn as the 10th-best team still in the tournament.

"Dan Hurley is back in the Sweet 16 with a roster that has experienced turnover yet still has some sense of continuity," Medcalf wrote. "Weird losses at Marquette and vs. Creighton lowered expectations for this team entering the NCAA tournament, and it seemed as if UConn was holding to those expectations. It had more trouble than anticipated early against UCLA, despite the Bruins not having their best player. But, as they've also done this season, the Huskies demonstrated they have the players to win ugly, get rebounds, defend well and hit shots. Braylon Mullins doesn't look like a freshman anymore. Alex Karaban had a career-high 27 points Sunday. Tarris Reed Jr. has been unstoppable on his best nights. Overall, the Huskies held UCLA to 91 points per 100 possessions. They have the tools to make, or match, history, in part because they know who they are perhaps more than any other team in the field."

UConn’s positioning outside the top tier says more about perception than capability, especially for a team that has consistently proven it can win in multiple ways. Under Hurley, the Huskies have developed an identity built on toughness, rebounding and defensive discipline; traits that tend to hold up as the tournament intensifies.

That identity will be critical against the Spartans, a team known for its own physicality and structure. The matchup could come down to execution in key moments, where UConn’s experience in high-pressure situations may provide an edge. If players like Karaban continue to produce offensively, the Huskies become far more difficult to contain.

Looking ahead, UConn isn’t just trying to advance; it’s chasing history. A win would move them one step closer to another Final Four and keep alive the possibility of a third national championship in four seasons, further cementing their place among college basketball’s elite programs.
