ESPN FPI Provides Texans' Best Case, Worst Case Records For 2026

ESPN's FPI gives Houston a 12-5 ceiling and a 7-10 floor for 2026, with Stroud's pass protection and the offensive line deciding which outcome plays out.

The Houston Texans went 12-5 in 2025, reached the AFC Divisional Round, and their defense is arguably the best in the league. The Texans’ defense allowed only 295 points, and nine of the 11 starters from last season are back, giving DeMeco Ryans unusual continuity.

C.J. Stroud remains the biggest variable. His 2025 campaign dropped compared to his rookie year, where he passed for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. The bigger concern is not simply Stroud’s production. It is what happens when Houston cannot run its offense efficiently. ESPN notes that Stroud has a 66 QBR from a clean pocket but only 27 when pressured, making protection a major part of the quarterback equation.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Houston a 12-5 best-case scenario. This matches the Texans’ 2025 regular-season record. They enter 2026 with Super Bowl expectations, so another Divisional Round exit would feel like an incomplete season. The defense makes 12 wins realistic if the offense avoids becoming a weekly liability.

The 7-10 worst case shows how dependent Houston is on Stroud and the offensive line. It shows the uncertainty around an offense that finished only 18th in total offense last season. If protection remains poor and Stroud struggles under pressure, the defense may not be enough to save every game. The AFC is too competitive for Houston to expect its defense to erase every offensive problem.

The Texans ranked last in run-block win rate at 68% and 30th in pass-block win rate at 56% in 2025. This makes life harder for both Stroud and the running game. Overall, ESPN projects 9.3 wins, but the Texans’ defensive profile gives them a path to outperform that number.

Nick Caserio has strengthened the roster without taking away its defensive identity. David Montgomery should help Houston stay balanced and give Stroud another way to move the chains. The offensive line additions are aimed directly at the team’s biggest weakness.

Kayshon Boutte gives the passing game another option after Higgins’ injury. On defense, Kayden McDonald adds more size up front, while Reed Blankenship gives the secondary another veteran. Jadeveon Clowney’s return is particularly useful because Houston can rotate another proven pass rusher alongside Anderson and Hunter.

The encouraging sign is that Stroud enters Year 2 with offensive coordinator Nick Caley and has reportedly shown better command of the offense during the offseason. If that improvement translates to Sundays, Houston can push well beyond the FPI’s middle-ground projection and become a genuine AFC championship threat.
