Shaquille O'Neal won't be at the desk Friday night, and ESPN already has a familiar face lined up to fill that oversized chair.
Shaquille O'Neal joined “Inside the NBA” for the 2011–12 season after wrapping up a legendary 19-year playing career. He quickly established himself as the show's most unpredictable personality. For over a decade, his viral back-and-forth with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and host Ernie Johnson set the standard for sports studio shows, blending high-level basketball breakdowns with unscripted comedy.
During the transition, O’Neal solidified his future by signing a long-term contract extension with TNT Sports worth over $15 million per year, ensuring he'd remain part of the Inside the NBA crew as it continued on ESPN.
But he won't be in that studio on Friday. O'Neal is sitting out for undisclosed reasons, and ESPN has tapped a one-night fill-in.
Per an ESPN press release, “NBA Tip-Off presented by Eli Lilly kicks off at 6:30 p.m. featuring Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and guest analyst Jalen Rose, with Inside the NBA presented by Eli Lilly immediately following the conclusion of the final game. Both shows are produced by TNT Sports.”
Later, Sports Media Watch's Jon Lewis clarified that Rose, who ESPN laid off three years ago, will be back on ESPN Friday night, filling in for Shaq.
Rose, however, is no stranger to the set. He previously filled in for Kenny Smith during the 2024–25 season of Inside the NBA on TNT and has been working with TNT and NBC Sports in recent years.
This guest spot is a one-off. Sources report that Rose is a temporary fill-in specifically for the Friday night show, with O'Neal expected to return to the desk for the remaining weekend broadcasts.
