ESPN is expanding Pat McAfee’s role ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The network announced that McAfee will join “Monday Night Countdown” as a full-time analyst.
NFL analyst Ari Meirov first reported the change on X. The move gives McAfee another major NFL platform alongside his existing ESPN commitments.
“ESPN announced that they are adding Pat McAfee to Monday Night Football as an analyst on its pregame show, ‘Monday Night Countdown,’” Meirov wrote.
Meirov later revealed the complete updated lineup of panellists for the program. Scott Van Pelt will host, while McAfee joins Jason Kelce, Jason McCourty and Marcus Spears.
The addition expands McAfee’s presence across ESPN’s football coverage. He already hosts “The Pat McAfee Show” and appears on “College GameDay” during the college football season.
McAfee’s new role also gives ESPN another recognizable personality for its Monday night coverage. His style should provide a different dynamic alongside Kelce, McCourty and Spears.
The timing also makes sense for ESPN as the network builds toward Super Bowl LXI. McAfee has become one of the company’s most visible football personalities since joining its broader programming lineup.
McAfee’s path to this position remains unusual since his first appearence on the network in July 2019. This was after he retired from the NFL in 2017 following an eight-year career with the Indianapolis Colts. He later built a successful media career before bringing The Pat McAfee Show to ESPN in September 2023. His influence within the network has continued to grow since that move.

The main Monday Night Football broadcast remains unchanged. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will continue calling the games from the booth.
That separation gives ESPN two distinct products on Monday nights. Buck and Aikman will provide the traditional game broadcast, while McAfee’s group handles the pregame discussion.
For ESPN, McAfee’s addition strengthens a studio show already featuring several prominent football voices. Whereas McAfee now has another prominent NFL assignment, further expanding his role at ESPN.
