The Premier League's fiercest personal rivalry is packing its bags for New Jersey. Brazil's next World Cup match is at the quarter-final against Norway in the last 16 when Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhães will go head-to-head again, but this time in national colours.
Their history is anything but friendly. The rivalry flared up in March 2024 when Arsenal and Manchester City played a goalless draw at the Etihad, and Pep Guardiola needed to separate them before they could shake hands.
Haaland did throw the ball at the back of Gabriel's head in the celebration when Manchester City pulled forward, and Gabriel took his place in the penalty area months later and struck the ball home in a late equaliser. Gabriel hasn't been without his moments, either - when he rejected Haaland's nudge and pulled at his shorts in another tantrum.

Haaland is coming into this World Cup in fearsome form. He is Norway's talisman and is one of the top goal scorers in the tournament with five goals, including the one that sealed the victory over Ivory Coast.

Haaland looks in terrific form for the World Cup match on paper, having guided Norway through the Round of 32. Meanwhile, Gabriel's been one of Brazil's most impressive defensive players of the season.
The game is a compelling contrast in style. Haaland's strong points include quick transitions, winning space inside the penalty area, aerial duels, and one-on-one defending. Gabriel's strong points include being able to position well, one-on-one defending, and winning the physical battle.
Gabriel will be keen to change the script, and Haaland will see his form and scoring ability against one of the Premier League's best defenders on the world stage.
