Howie Roseman has earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s premier talent evaluators during his time running the Philadelphia Eagles. Looking ahead to the 2027 NFL draft, Athlon Sports’ latest mock draft has Philadelphia selecting Alabama edge Yhonzae Pierre at pick No. 22.
Entering the 2026 season, Philadelphia’s edge rusher room is not a current point of need or concern. The Eagles acquired and signed Jonathan Greenard to a four-year, $100 million contract extension this offseason. Meanwhile, Jalyx Hunt looks to be set for a dominant season, reportedly living in the opponent’s backfield throughout training camp, whether lining up against the Eagles’ offense or in joint practices against the Patriots.
However, with Hunt, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean and other core players set to hit extension eligibility in 2027, it may leave Nolan Smith on the outside looking in.
After a quiet rookie season, Smith broke onto the scene in his sophomore campaign, tallying 6.5 sacks in the regular season and 4 in the playoffs, which led all NFL players. Smith had a down year last season, recording just 3 sacks over 12 games while dealing with strained triceps.
While draft classmate Jalen Carter secured a massive four-year, $152 million extension, Smith has yet to see a long-term deal made. The Eagles will likely pick up his fifth-year option, but his long-term future in Philadelphia remains in question.
That’s where Yhonzae Pierre enters the picture. In his first season at Alabama, the five-star recruit played fewer than 100 snaps on defense. In his sophomore year, Pierre had a breakout season in a primary starting role.
Pierre led the Crimson Tide in sacks (8.0) and tackles for loss (14.5). He recorded 45 total pressures, 3 forced fumbles and 53 total tackles.
At 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds, Pierre has a quick first step and a strong bull rush for a player his size. While his array of pass-rush moves still needs development, his combination of speed and power as a raw athlete has driven his production on the field.
Roseman has consistently prioritized the trenches, placing a high value on drafting and developing talent along both the offensive and defensive lines. Depending on how Smith’s season plays out, Pierre could serve as a valuable, high-upside edge rusher on a cost-controlled rookie contract.
