A.J. Brown has easily been one of the league’s top wide receivers since joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. While he continued to produce at a high level last season, a potential split between the team and the star receiver appears increasingly likely this offseason.

Speculation about Brown began early in the year, when reports of locker-room tension surfaced. He was reportedly frustrated with his target share, and there were indications of a growing disconnect with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Those issues have fueled trade rumors. Although the Eagles have not committed to moving Brown, they have not ruled it out either, and according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a post–June 1 trade to the New England Patriots is a strong possibility.

Philadelphia’s offseason moves suggest they may be preparing for that outcome, adding Dontayvion Wicks, Marquise Brown, and Elijah Moore to bolster the wide receiver group. However, former All-Pro tight end Greg Olsen has cautioned against rushing into such a decision, emphasizing that teams rarely improve by moving on from elite talent.

“Things aren’t always going to be perfect,” Olsen said on Up & Adams with Kay Adams. “You’re not always going to have harmony in the locker room. Not everyone is going to be best friends.”

“NFL teams don’t traditionally get better by getting rid of really good players. In A.J. Brown’s case, he’s one of the top players in the league, especially at wide receiver. That’s going to be a really delicate balance.”

Brown has recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his four seasons with the Eagles, including back-to-back 1,400-yard campaigns at the start of his tenure. None of Philadelphia’s current options, including DeVonta Smith, has matched that level of consistency.

Beyond production, Brown’s presence forces defensive adjustments, creating opportunities for Hurts and the Eagles’ rushing attack. Without that kind of impact, the offense could become easier to defend, and replacing it immediately would be difficult, even with a high draft pick.

"Howie Rosmen is one of the best front office guys in the league, and his ability to roster construction is second to none," Olsen added. "But you know, you gotta do some soul searching. Are we confident that our roster gets better by taking away one of the most elite players in the league, and that's a tough conversation to have."

While Brown has not addressed the trade speculation publicly, the Eagles have maintained a diplomatic stance, and insider reports suggest a decision may already be in place, with Schefter reporting that multiple sources told him the receiver is likely to become a Patriot after June 1.

A post–June 1 move would also make financial sense. It allows the Eagles to split Brown’s $43.5 million dead cap hit over two seasons. Instead of absorbing the full amount this year, the 2026 charge would drop to $16.4 million, creating roughly $27.1 million in immediate cap flexibility.
