The Philadelphia Eagles are already making roster moves in the aftermath of their blockbuster A.J. Brown trade.

Just one day after sending Brown to the New England Patriots in a move that stunned much of the NFL, the Eagles announced another transaction on Tuesday, signing veteran running back Elijah Mitchell ahead of organized team activities.

Philadelphia revealed the move Tuesday morning after Mitchell impressed the team during a tryout earlier this offseason. The former San Francisco 49ers running back will now get an opportunity to compete for a role in one of the NFL's deepest backfields.

Mitchell's arrival comes at an interesting time for the Eagles, who have dominated headlines following their decision to trade Brown, one of the league's premier wide receivers, to New England in exchange for future draft capital.

New Look Offense in Philadelphia

While much of the attention remains focused on how Philadelphia will replace Brown's production in the passing game, the front office continues to add depth across the roster.

Mitchell, 28, entered the league as a sixth-round pick out of Louisiana in 2021 and immediately made an impact with the 49ers. As a rookie, he rushed for 963 yards and five touchdowns in just 11 games while averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

His career has since been slowed by injuries.

After appearing in only five games during the 2022 season because of a knee injury, Mitchell returned in 2023 and rushed for 281 yards in a reserve role. A hamstring injury wiped out his entire 2024 campaign, and he appeared in just one game last season while spending time with both the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.

Now, he gets another opportunity with a Philadelphia team that remains firmly in win-now mode despite moving on from Brown.

Mitchell Joins Crowded Eagles Backfield

The challenge for Mitchell will be earning touches in a loaded running back room.

The Eagles already feature superstar Saquon Barkley, who remains the centerpiece of the offense. Philadelphia also added Tank Bigsby this offseason and returns young backs Will Shipley, Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele.

Even so, Mitchell brings valuable experience and proven production when healthy.

His signing also highlights how aggressively general manager Howie Roseman continues to build depth throughout the roster. While the Brown trade has dominated national conversation, the Eagles appear determined to strengthen every position group as they prepare for another championship push.

The move may not generate the same headlines as trading away a Pro Bowl receiver, but it gives Philadelphia another veteran option in the backfield as OTA practices get underway.

With training camp still months away, Mitchell now has a chance to prove he can revive his career and carve out a role on one of the NFL's most talented rosters.
