With starting quarterback Jalen Hurts out until further notice with a blood clot, the Philadelphia Eagles have found themselves a little thin at quarterback heading into Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers. So the Eagles have gone out and added a new arm to the QB room ahead of Sunday’s game.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Eagles are signing quarterback Joe Milton from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad to their 53-man roster. He will presumably be either the backup or emergency QB behind Tanner McKee, the slated starter for Week 6.
“Breaking: The #Eagles are signing QB Joe Milton off the #Cowboys practice squad and to their 53-man roster, per sources,” Schultz wrote.
Milton is in his third NFL season after going to the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft following a standout senior season at Tennessee. He played one game for the Patriots in 2024, leading them to a win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, and was subsequently traded to the Cowboys.

In 2025, Milton appeared in four games and completed 62.5-percent of his passes for 183 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. But after acquiring journeyman Sam Howell (who ironically enough was a backup for the Eagles in 2025) in the ensuing offseason, the Cowboys decided to waive Milton and add him to the practice squad.
State of the Eagles
The Eagles are in pretty rough shape after last week’s stunning loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Hurts completed just 52.5-percent of his passes in a 19-17 loss that came down to a last-second field goal.
The season is quickly emerging as one of the worst of Hurts’ career as a starter, even when he has been healthy.
At 2-3 on the season, the Eagles simply need to bounce back with a win over the Panthers this week. If not, they’ll be in a rough spot heading into three straight division rivalry games before their bye.
So whether it’s McKee, Milton or some other QB, the Eagles need to get some strong QB play and fast.
