The Washington Nationals surprised everyone with their decision to option OF Dylan Crews to Triple-A Rochester in the final days of spring training. Crews’ scouting reports all cite him as a five-tool player; not elite in any one category but strong in all five. He’s already established 20 HR/30 SB upside during his limited time in MLB. He’s shown plus raw power and 89th percentile sprint speed along with solid hard hit rates and elite bat speed. This is all a strong signal that Crews’ demotion has set up one of the first buy low opportunities of the season.

Spring Training Collapse and Front-Office Statement

The new regime atop the Nationals is set on correcting some of the mistakes of the past regime.

New president of baseball operations Paul Toboni and manager Blake Butera believe that some players have been rushed through their development stages. This has led to some players having difficulty adjusting at the Major League level. Crews is clearly among the players they have in mind with this philosophical shift. It was a statement move by the front office that nobody on the team will just be handed a job without earning it.

Crews struggled at the plate in spring training, batting just .103/.206/.103 with 11 strikeouts in 34 PA (32.4% K%). He was working to make adjustments to his swing to change his timing at the plate and elevate the ball more. In 2025, his groundball rate was 50.4% and his overall quality of contact was keeping him from getting to his raw power. In addition, he was getting behind in counts far too often and had difficulty attacking pitches in the zone. The team sent him to Triple-A Rochester with a plan to get him out of the spotlight in Washington and give him an opportunity to make the adjustments in his swing that he needs to be successful.

Immediate Fantasy Impact of Dylan Crews Being Sent Down

ADP Drop and Waiver-Wire Strategy for Advanced Leagues

Fantasy owners drafted Crews aggressively until his demotion on March 20, with an average ADP of 171 in NFBC drafts. In drafts since then his ADP has fallen off a cliff to 373, essentially undrafted. Crews’ ownership in Yahoo leagues is down to 44% and his ranking has gone from 173 to 1135. In other words, he’s essentially dropped off a cliff in value and there is a good chance you’ll find him on the waiver wire in your leagues.

Tools vs. Track Record: What the Data Actually Says

The scouting reports on Crews all agree that he has an elite hit tool, makes solid strike zone decisions and doesn’t chase pitches out of the zone. Like many young hitters he can crush fastballs but has had some difficulty identifying and hitting spin. His hit skills are coupled with elite level base running and excellent sprint speed. He needs to work on his launch angle and squaring up pitches better to get to his power on the pull side. There is work to be done here, so the Nationals are likely taking the right approach in giving him time to work on his swing in the minors.

Projection systems have adjusted to his demotion to the minors and have downgraded his total PA for 2026 down to around 440 PA. That puts him somewhere around 100-105 games played in the major leagues this season. Overall, ZiPS is projecting a .240/.310/.346 line with 58 %, 49 RBI, 12 HR, and 20 SB.

Exact Timeline to Buy Low and Call-Up Window

Dylan Crews’ 4-8 week Triple-A window sets up an actionable stash-and-strike fantasy acquisition window.

Realistic Return Date and Performance Triggers

The Nationals haven’t made public their exact performance triggers for Crews to return to the team. However, they are looking for him to work counts in his favor to avoid getting into the 0-1 and 0-2 counts that have put him in the hole he’s in. He’s making changes in his swing to get away from a toe tap for timing and getting back to the leg kick that made him successful in 2024. The idea being that the leg kick will also help him elevate the ball to his pull side where his raw power is greatest. The expectation is that he will spend 4-8 weeks in Triple-A before he’s called back up. That is in line with his current projections for the rest of the season.

Now is the time to buy low on Crews. His stock should only rise, assuming he performs well in Triple-A. If he’s on the waiver wire and you can spare a roster spot, you can probably pick him up for a $0-1 FAAB bid. If he’s on another team’s roster, you can probably make a relatively low offer of bench depth or a backup starter for him. The longer you wait, the more he will cost you in a trade or off waivers. The buy low window will start to close once he starts to hit.

Smart Fantasy Baseball Managers Want To Know More About Dylan Crews

Why was Dylan Crews sent down to Triple-A in 2026?
The Nationals optioned Crews after he hit just .103 with zero extra-base hits and 11 strikeouts in 34 spring training PA. President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni described it as a planned reset to fix his swing mechanics and restore confidence, rather than forcing him into major-league reps while he was struggling.

When will Dylan Crews be called back up?
Most analysts project a 4- to 8-week stay in Rochester. If Crews posts a .280-plus average and cuts his strikeouts in his first 10-15 Triple-A games, expect a call-up window opening between late April and mid-May.

Should I drop Dylan Crews in fantasy baseball leagues?
In standard 12-team leagues, yes, drop him from active rosters immediately. In 15-team or deeper formats, stash him on the bench because his 20 HR/25 SB upside makes him worth the wait.

What are Dylan Crews 2026 fantasy baseball projections?
Post-demotion ZiPS projections still forecast .240/.310/.346 with 12 home runs and 20-plus stolen bases over roughly 105 games once he returns to the majors.

Is Dylan Crews a buy-low candidate right now?
Absolutely. His ADP has already slid into the 300s. Advanced owners should add him on waivers at minimal cost and hold for the inevitable call-up and production spike.

How does the Dylan Crews demotion affect the Nationals' outfield fantasy value?
It temporarily boosts short-term value for Jacob Young and Joey Wiemer, but Crews remains the highest-upside long-term play in the group once he returns.
