Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees didn’t hold back this Wednesday when asked about the Washington Commanders’ overtime blunder against the New York Giants.
The Commanders dropped to 1-3-1 on the season this past Sunday despite having a golden opportunity to attempt a game-winning field goal from the Giants’ 24-yard line. It’s a mistake that Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has received plenty of blame for.
“We have to stop the clock. We have to know the situation,” Daniels said postgame. “We have to relay that as an offense. It starts with everyone, top down. Ultimately, it’s on me.”
Brees, a Super Bowl champion and 13-time Pro Bowler, was asked to share his thoughts on the Commanders botching the last 14 seconds of overtime against the Giants. While it’ll go down as a failure for the entire offense, Brees believes it’s on the quarterback to get everyone in the right position.
“To me, the thing that’s unforgivable about it is the lack of a sense of urgency. They’re breaking the huddle, you got guys who don’t know where to line up, they’re sending guys in motion. I’m like. “What are you doing?’ You’re already well within field goal range,” Brees said. “It’s unforgivable. The part of it that really bugs me is the fact that it didn’t seem like anybody on the field had any awareness. To be honest with you, that’s on the quarterback.”

Micah Parsons had a much harsher take on this mistake.
Green Bay Packers star Micah Parsons said Daniels’ mistake in overtime is going to cost Dan Quinn his job with the Commanders.
“Jayden Daniels probably cost my man Dan Quinn his job, to be honest with you,” Parsons said. “To be honest with you. And, like, I’m a big Jayden Daniels fan. But the reality is, he probably cost a lot of people their jobs this past weekend.”
If Daniels wants to silence his critics, a win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6 would certainly help his cause.
