The Miami Dolphins' secondary will enter training camp as one of the team's biggest question marks.
They selected Chris Johnson out of San Diego State in the first round of April's draft. While he has plenty of upside, the Dolphins' cornerback group behind him consists of Darrell Baker Jr., Alex Austin, Jason Marshall, Marco Wilson, and JuJu Brents.
Although they are in rebuild mode, the Dolphins should consider signing free-agent cornerback Kenny Moore II.
"I'm at the perfect point in my career where I really want to win, and hopefully that comes with a team that has the culture and the scheme set up for me," Moore said on SiriusXM Radio last week. "I just don't want to be a guy on the team because I feel like I have so many strengths to give to the secondary and to the team, and to be a leader.
"But for me, I was putting down in my notes probably two days ago, whenever I was flying in. It's more about whatever role I have on a team and perfecting that role. It's less about me. I don't talk about me."
Are the Dolphins a Fit for Kenny Moore?
Moore certainly wants to join a team that's contending for a championship. That doesn't describe the Dolphins after new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan released several veteran players this offseason.
However, if he were open to joining a young defense, Moore would provide a veteran presence to a roster in need of leadership and give Miami a proven playmaker in the slot.
Moore, 30, requested and received his release from the Colts in May after spending nine seasons with the organization. In his final season, he recorded 55 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, six passes defensed, and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. It was the first time since 2022 that Moore finished with fewer than three interceptions in a season.
Moore may not be the same player he once was because of age and injuries, but he has excelled in zone coverage throughout his career, which should fit well in Jeff Hafley's defense. Hafley is expected to rely heavily on Cover 2 and Cover 3 concepts.
Throughout his career, Moore has used his high football IQ to consistently put himself in the right position against the run and in intermediate coverage.
Moore would likely prefer to sign with a contender. But as training camp approaches, he may find that a young team like the Dolphins offers him a better opportunity and a better fit for his skill set.
