Edwin Diaz’s first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers just keeps getting worse.
On Tuesday, the Dodgers placed the struggling closer on the 15-day injured list for the second time this year, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic.
The Dodgers are calling up right-hander Emmet Sheehan to replace Diaz on the 26-man roster.
It was later revealed that Diaz was put on the IL due to neck inflammation. The Dodgers expect Diaz to return this season.
Diaz had surgery to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow earlier in the season. This forced him to miss over three months of action from April 20 to July 29.
Since coming off the IL, Diaz has blown three out of five save chances and has given up 11 runs in just 5.2 innings. His fastball velocity was also down in his latest appearance. This was the case earlier in the season as well, before the Dodgers discovered he had loose bodies in his elbow.
The Dodgers signed Diaz away from the New York Mets in the offseason, inking him to a three-year, $69 million deal. The 32-year-old was coming off another elite season in New York, where he had a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves in 62 appearances. Diaz has already blown more saves (4) this year than he did all of last season (3).
With Diaz back on the shelf, the Dodgers can go back to left-hander Tanner Scott as their closer. Scott is having a major resurgence in 2026, posting a 2.20 ERA and 16 saves in 18 chances.
Like Diaz, Scott had a nightmare first season with the Dodgers, where he had a 4.74 ERA and 10 blown saves. However, he is experiencing a big bounce-back this season.
The Dodgers enter play on Tuesday with a 75-51 record and eight game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West division.
