The Los Angeles Dodgers tied up the rivalry series against the San Diego Padres with a 5-4 win Tuesday.
In the series opener on Monday, the Padres only needed a solo home run from Miguel Andujar in the first inning to take the game from the World Series champions. Padres closer Mason Miller gifted the Dodgers in the ninth inning of Monday's matchup by walking the first two batters.
The Dodgers failed to capitalize on the opportunity as Miller proceeded to retire the next three hitters. LA fell 1-0, losing first place of the NL West.
On Tuesday, things got dicey between the NL West rivals as the game was tied at four heading into the ninth frame.
In the top of the inning, Miller committed the first error of his career after throwing the ball away on what should've been a pickoff on Dodgers pinch-runner Alex Call at first base.
Call reached third base with Andy Pages at the plate. Miller and the Dodgers outfielder got in an incredible nine-pitch at-bat. The battle ended in a sacrifice fly from Pages, which was enough for the Dodgers to reclaim the lead.
While the Dodgers' bullpen is by no means as highly-touted as the Padres' bullpen, the defending champions deployed World Series hero Will Klein in the bottom of the ninth.
Klein got the job done and earned the first save of his career. It was quite the victory for the Dodgers, who failed to muster any runs in the series opener at Petco Park.
For Miller, however, it was the end of a phenomenal streak. The Padres closer hadn't been charged with a loss since May 17, 2025 when he was still a member of the Athletics.
Just over a year later, the Dodgers found a way to get the best of Miller. The two NL West teams will square off Wednesday for the series win, but the Dodgers returned back atop the division Tuesday.
