Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark had the chance to become the first WNBA player ever to lead the league in assists while finishing in the top three in scoring. She already surpassed Alyssa Thomas in assists per game when the season resumed, but a couple of disappointing performances over the last few days hurt her numbers.
In the end, Clark failed to achieve the WNBA first. She finished the season third in the league in scoring with 22.3 points per game, but she ended up second in assists (8.3), behind Alyssa Thomas’ 8.5 dimes per game.
The Fever playmaker had a rough showing against the Minnesota Lynx in their final game of the campaign. She went 1-of-12 from the field for two points and dished out just three assists, as Minnesota blew out Indiana 86-66.
Thomas, for her part, finished with nine dimes in the Phoenix Mercury’s final regular-season game against the Las Vegas Aces in order to secure the assist title.

As Athlon cited before the final day of the WNBA regular season, Clark needed at least 10 assists in order to compete for the No. 1 spot in assists. She also needed Thomas to finish with fewer than seven assists against the Aces.
Unfortunately, neither happened, and Clark missed out on what would have been an incredible WNBA milestone.
Regardless, Clark and the Fever are now expected to shift their focus on the WNBA playoffs. They will face the Aces in the first round in a rematch of the 2025 semifinal series that went the full five games.
