Chicago Sky star Dijonai Carrington got emotional after learning about Russell Westbrook’s retirement.
On Wednesday, the former NBA MVP officially announced his retirement from the league after 18 seasons. He posted a three-minute video on his official Instagram account to share his decision. The post received congratulatory messages from fans and fellow players for an incredible career.
For her part, Carrington could not help but feel overwhelmed by Westbrook’s announcement, who she says is her favorite player. The Sky guard-forward expressed her reaction on social media.
“my favvvvvvv player ever 😭😭😭❤️,” Carrington wrote on her Instagram story, sharing a post by SportsCenter.
Westbrook had one of the most unforgettable runs in NBA history. This is highlighted by his historic 2017 MVP season, in which he averaged a triple-double.
Westbrook also became a nine-time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA All-Star MVP and a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Meanwhile, Carrington was on the wrong end of headlines this past week. This was after her hard foul on Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham during their regular season game on Saturday. She was ejected in the first quarter after being assessed a Flagrant 2 foul.
But the 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player bounced back in a big way in their next game. She dropped a career-high 26 points against the Seattle Storm on Monday.
Aside from the offensive explosion, Carrington also added six boards and five steals for Chicago. However, it was not enough to secure the victory, as the Sky lost, 97-88.
Carrington finished with only three points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal on Wednesday as Chicago suffered another loss, this time falling to the Golden State Valkyries, 91-71.
