The Arizona Diamondbacks earned a gritty comeback win on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, rallying to win 8-7 after trailing 7-0 through the first five innings.
It marked Arizona's sixth win in their last seven games, as they have improved to three games over .500 and are firmly in contention for a playoff spot in the National League.
However, Sunday was not all great for Arizona. The team's best player and face of the franchise, right fielder Corbin Carroll, did not finish the contest due to injury.
Carroll batted four times, going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts, before his fifth plate appearance came in the bottom of the ninth inning. He never came to the plate. Instead, Jorge Barrosa pinch-hit for Carroll and took his spot in right field.
After the game, manager Torey Lovullo provided the reason for Carroll's early exit.
"Corbin Carroll is day to day with a hyperextended right elbow, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says. No imaging, chance to play tomorrow," reported Jose M. Romero of The Arizona Republic.
Fortunately, the way Lovullo described the injury, it does not appear to be a serious setback, and Carroll could even be in Monday's lineup for the series opener against the Athletics. The Diamondbacks will hope that is the case, as Carroll's play has been a driving force behind their success.
Across 356 at-bats, the 25-year-old has posted a .250 batting average, .344 on-base percentage, .824 OPS, 14 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Getting him back healthy quickly matters for a team with real playoff aspirations in the second half.
