Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams enters Sunday’s Week 3 matchup needing to turn early-season chances into production. Locked On Lions host Matt Dery said Williams has not played well through two games, citing drops and missed opportunities on deep throws as Detroit tries to regain the offensive identity it lacked in its loss at Buffalo.

The matchup gives Williams a chance to respond immediately. New York Jets cornerbacks Azareye’h Thomas and Brandon Stephens have shown vulnerabilities against vertical speed, according to Locked On Jets host John Butchko, who pointed to a recent deep completion allowed in a critical situation against Green Bay.

Butchko said Aaron Glenn’s defense is likely to bring pressure and leave its outside corners in man coverage, creating a clear opening for Detroit to keep attacking downfield. Williams’ speed makes him the most direct test of whether Thomas and Stephens can hold up without consistent help over the top.

The Lions do not need Williams to carry the offense alone, but they need the threat of him doing so. Quarterback Jared Goff has multiple established options in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta, yet successful vertical shots can force a defense to widen its coverage and create easier throws underneath.

Dery framed the week as a necessary response after Detroit’s uneven start, saying the team must play better football. Williams converting a contested opportunity or reconnecting with Goff on a deep route would give the offense a needed jolt against a defense that has played well early.

Glenn knows the personnel he coached in Detroit, and the Lions know the aggressive tendencies he brings to the Jets. That familiarity makes Williams’ execution especially important: Detroit can identify the matchup it wants, but its vertical receiver has to finish the play when it appears.

Detroit has the offensive firepower to rebound at Ford Field, but its fastest route to making the Jets pay may run through Williams. A productive afternoon would ease concern over his first two games and make the rest of the offense harder to defend.

– Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs will face an early test against a Jets front that Butchko said was reshaped to stop the run, including the addition of nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat. Dery said the Lions want to reestablish their physical run-game identity after leaning on Gibbs heavily in Week 1.

– Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta needs a more consistent role after seeing early-game involvement fade, Dery said. More steady touches for LaPorta could help Goff avoid long-yardage situations against an aggressive Jets defense.

– Detroit will also look for cleaner communication in a depleted secondary, with safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch unavailable, according to Dery. The Lions cannot afford coverage busts against Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and quarterback Geno Smith.
