The Detroit Lions have an unusually clear matchup advantage for Sunday night: Carolina Panthers cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quadriceps) and Mike Jackson (groin) both landed on injured reserve Wednesday, stripping the opponent of its two top outside options on defense. The injuries leave the Panthers with only three healthy cornerbacks on their 53-man roster, creating a passing-game opportunity Detroit needs to convert into a road win.
Locked On Lions host Matt Dery argued Detroit must aggressively target the replacement corners rather than playing conservatively and letting Carolina’s secondary survive. The Lions have the personnel to do it: quarterback Jared Goff can distribute the ball quickly to wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, forcing an undermanned secondary to cover across the field instead of merely protecting against deep shots.
Carolina’s problems extend beyond its secondary. Guard Damien Lewis (elbow) and wide receiver Xavier Legette (knee) have yet to practice this week, while tackle Monroe Freeling (concussion) and receiver Jalen Coker (quadriceps) returned to practice Thursday, but only on a limited basis. Dery pointed to the depleted protection group as another opening for Detroit’s defense to disrupt quarterback Bryce Young before the Panthers can lean on a shortened passing game.
The injuries do not guarantee anything, particularly in a prime-time road setting, but they change the standard for Detroit. With Horn and Jackson unavailable, the Lions should have favorable matchups outside. With Carolina’s offensive line still unsettled, Detroit’s front should have chances to dictate the game. A win alone would move the Lions forward; exploiting those advantages would offer a more meaningful answer after an uneven 2-1 start.
Detroit can turn a favorable injury report into a statement only by making Carolina’s emergency depth chart decide the game. The Lions’ passing attack and pass rush have the matchups to do exactly that Sunday night.
Lions News and Notes
– Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will not face charges after Novi police and the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed an alleged August incident, according to reporting Wednesday. Williams’ attorneys denied domestic-violence allegations, and Detroit declined comment.
– Dery said ESPN placed Detroit at No. 13 in its latest NFL power rankings. He called the slot fair for a 2-1 team that has won close games but has not yet consistently played to its expectations.
