Derek Jeter is getting ripped apart on social media for the postgame question he asked to Atlanta Braves star outfielder Michael Harris II following his team’s Game 2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night.
Harris II joined Fox Sports 1’s postgame show on Sunday evening. The Braves topped the Dodgers, 3-2, in Game 2. The series is now tied, 1-1, heading into Game 3, which will be held back in Atlanta.
Jeter, though, is facing heat for the “ridiculous” postgame question that he asked to the star center fielder of the Braves.
“I just want to ask this question: we’re talking about mindset, coming into the series, it seems like the whole world, all they are talking about is the Los Angeles Dodgers going for a three-peat,” Jeter said. “And you guys sort of just seem to fly under the radar. Your mindset, your mentality, is it you guys want to play the spoiler? Or you’re just not necessarily thinking about the Dodgers? You’re just out there trying to prove to the rest of the world that you have the best team in baseball?”
First off, it’s just bad, “chunky” question, as Awful Announcing notes. But it’s also just a ridiculous narrative to suggest that the Braves are playing “spoiler” against the Dodgers.
The Dodgers are the favorites to win the World Series, with their talented roster and massive payroll. But the Braves are no slouches, either.
Los Angeles won 100 games in the regular season. The Braves won 94. There’s no massive gap between these two teams. The Braves have been contenders in the National League for the past decade or so. They’ve won a World Series, too.
Atlanta’s roster is loaded with elite players, from Michael Harris II to Ronald Acuna Jr. to Matt Olson to Chris Sale, arguably the best pitcher in baseball.
MLB fans ripping Jeter for his question
“Jeter asking Mike if they just wanted to play spoiler or do they actually think they can win… what the (heck)!” one frustrated fan wrote.
“Horrible, horrible question,” one fan wrote.
“Ridiculous to even suggest that to a player,” one fan added.
Game 3 of the series will be a big one and it’s set for Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. E.T.
