Usually Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is an easy person to find given how many public appearances he makes. But for the Boulder County sheriff’s department, his door apparently wasn’t open.
According to Christopher Kamrani of The Athletic, a sheriff’s deputy showed up at Colorado’s open practice last week to serve papers to Sanders. But according to sheriff’s department spokesperson Carrie Haverfield, the deputy was “unavailable at the time to receive receipt of the papers” from Sanders.
Fortunately, the sheriff’s department was eventually able to get the papers into the hands of Sanders’ attorney, who accepted the papers on his behalf. And in case there were any fears that the university attempted to shield Sanders, Haverfield immediately dismissed such notions and even said that the university offer help in trying to help the deputy find the then-missing coach.
“While working with university staff to find a better time to complete the process, we heard from Mr. Sanders’ legal counsel who indicated that they were able to take receipt of the papers on behalf of Mr. Sanders, however, they were not located in Boulder County, so we transferred the paperwork to Denver to be served,” Haverfield said. “We did not find any university staff to be attempting to block the civil service, on the contrary, they were attempting to help our deputy find a better time to do so.”
It isn’t clear what the subpoena was issued to Sanders for, but ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio wrote that it was almost certainly in connection to his son Shilo’s upcoming bankruptcy trial. That trial is slated for later this month and will focus on “whether an $11.89 million default judgment arising from an alleged assault will be discharged through bankruptcy.”

Coach Prime in 2026
Deion Sanders heads into a critical year with the Colorado Buffaloes. The honeymoon is pretty much over and the team’s 3-9 record last year has many people on edge.
The 9-4 record the team enjoyed back in 2024 feels like a million years ago and things are likely to get tougher before they get better for Coach Prime and company.
Colorado open up the 2026 season against Georgia Tech on Thursday, September 3. The game will be played on ESPN.
