The Dallas Cowboys are getting a much-needed boost on defense, as linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is set to return for Monday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Overshown has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in the season opener against the New York Giants. After missing five games, the linebacker has been medically cleared to return, giving Dallas another option at a position dealing with injuries.
The Cowboys enter the Week 7 matchup at 2-4 after consecutive losses, including Sunday’s 23-13 defeat to the Green Bay Packers. Overshown’s return comes at an important time, particularly after linebacker Dee Winters suffered an Achilles strain against Green Bay.
DeMarvion Overshown cleared to return against Eagles
Overshown confirmed that he will be back on the field against Philadelphia after spending the past several weeks working through his recovery. The former third-round pick out of Texas said he has taken the rehabilitation process seriously while working toward his return.
“We play on Monday, so now I’ve got to wait an extra day, but I’m excited,” Overshown said, via the Dallas Cowboys’ official website. “I’ve definitely taken this rehab, this recovery, very serious. I’ve been trying to get back on the field since the week after I got out.”
The linebacker also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return and continue playing the sport he loves.
“Getting this opportunity to go this week, I’m thankful that I’m still able to get to do what I love,” Overshown said.
Dallas is expected to manage his workload as he works his way back into game action. A pitch count would allow the Cowboys to ease him back into the lineup while monitoring how he responds after missing five games.
Cowboys need Overshown to strengthen linebacker group
Overshown’s return is particularly important following Winters’ injury against Green Bay. Winters recorded the Cowboys’ first interception of the season before suffering the Achilles strain, leaving the defense needing additional help at linebacker.
Overshown is expected to return at weakside linebacker rather than take over the middle linebacker role. Rookie Jaishawn Barham has handled the middle linebacker responsibilities, including the defensive communication duties, during Overshown’s absence.
When healthy, Overshown provides Dallas with athleticism and coverage ability at the position. He excelled in the weakside role during the 2024 season before suffering a serious knee injury, and the Cowboys will hope he can make a similar impact as he returns to the field.
His presence could help improve a defense that has struggled to consistently stop opposing offenses. Dallas will need contributions from its entire defensive unit against Philadelphia, but getting an experienced linebacker back should provide additional depth and flexibility.
Cowboys hope Overshown can help against Philadelphia
The Cowboys face an important divisional matchup against the Eagles as they attempt to turn around their 2-4 start. Dallas has struggled on defense throughout the season, and improving communication, coverage and execution will be essential against a division opponent.
Overshown’s return does not guarantee an immediate turnaround, especially with the team expected to limit his workload. However, his athletic ability and experience could help strengthen the linebacker group as he gradually returns to full speed.
The Cowboys must also account for the loss of Winters, making Overshown’s availability even more significant heading into Monday night. If he can stay healthy and regain his previous form, he could become an important contributor for the remainder of the season.
