Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has taken Automated Ball-Strike challenge privileges away from Andy Pages during the postseason.
The decision came after Pages used a challenge during Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. With the Dodgers relying on a limited number of challenges, Roberts and the coaching staff decided the young outfielder should no longer make those calls himself.
Roberts explained the decision before Sunday’s Game 2 matchup, making clear that the Dodgers had already discussed the issue with Pages.
“Dave Roberts said they talked with Andy Pages about his ABS challenge yesterday, and have instructed him not to challenge pitches going forward,” Jack Harris reported on X.
The move highlights how much importance teams are placing on the ABS challenge system in the postseason. With limited opportunities available, managers and players have to decide carefully when a challenge is worth using.
For Pages, that responsibility will now be taken out of his hands. The Dodgers can instead rely on their coaching staff to determine when a pitch should be challenged.
The timing adds another layer to a difficult stretch for Los Angeles. The Dodgers dropped Game 2 to Atlanta, 3-2, allowing the Braves to even the series at 1-1 and take momentum into the next stage of the matchup.

Pages will still have an important role to play with his bat and defense. However, he will now have one fewer decision to make when he steps into the batter’s box.
For Roberts, the priority is simple. The Dodgers cannot afford to waste opportunities in a tight postseason series, and taking the ABS decision away from Pages gives the club another way to limit unnecessary mistakes.
