Hope springs eternal for all NFL teams before the first game of every season. But for Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, one team has just been crossed off the list.
Yesterday a video of Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert and his fiancee Madison Beer went viral. The video showed the two of them sitting around and looking lovingly into each others eyes on the training camp field.
While many NFL fans mocked Herbert for doing such a thing, Portnoy basically declared that Herbert's behavior disqualifies the Chargers as a potential playoff team altogether. He took to X last night and wrote "Teams that can win the Superbowl" before showing an image of the word "Chargers" crossed off.
Are the Chargers out already?
While some fans felt that Portnoy's link between the video and the football the Chargers will play on the field was shallow, plenty started to wonder if the team really is doomed to fail this season:
"This can only go one of two ways. He’s either going to have an MVP type szn with 5K yards and 40 Tuddies. Or he’s going to pull an Andrew Luck & retire after a few sacks... No in between," one user remarked on X.
"Remember when Tony Romo dated Jessica Simpson," wrote another.
"If she breaks up with him mid season they would actually be a contender… funny how that works and some people know exactly what I mean by that," a third wrote.

"Mr. Portnoy has always been a man who knows ball."
"That moment when you realize your franchise QB is basically just staring in a Disney movie and he’s already completely content with life and has 0 reason to want to win at football..."
Justin Herbert has yet to win a playoff game since entering the league in 2020. If he can't lead the team to that first playoff win this year, or if he misses the playoffs entirely, there's going to be a lot of uncomfortable conversations among fans in the ensuing offseason.
