Dave Bautista has remembered Rick Achberger, the longtime WWE superfan better known as “Sign Guy,” following his death at 54. The former WWE star shared a personal message for Achberger, recalling the humor and memorable interactions that made him such a recognizable part of WWE crowds.
Achberger’s death was announced on September 27, with wrestling historian Lance Peterson revealing that his health had declined rapidly over the previous month. He had been attending WWE events for decades and became a familiar face to viewers thanks to his backward red cap, blue workman’s shirt, and homemade signs.
Achberger was not simply a fan who watched from the front row. His signs regularly poked fun at wrestlers, particularly heels, and performers often played along with him during events. He reportedly attended 40 to 50 WWE shows a year and became such a recognizable presence that WWE featured him on Confidential and on a WWE-themed episode of Deal or No Deal in 2007.
His relationship with WWE talent also extended beyond the signs. Wrestlers including John Cena, Triple H, Big E, Bayley, Rhea Ripley and Hurricane Helms shared their own memories after learning of his passing. Cena remembered Achberger for the joy he brought to the audience, while Triple H described him as a fixture at WWE events.
Bautista’s tribute reflected the playful relationship Achberger had with performers who understood exactly what his signs were meant to do.
“Best heel ever! Thanks for the laughs buddy. No one in the world I’d rather tell me how bad I suck. See ya down the road 🙏🏼 #riprickachberger #wwesignguy.”
Rick Achberger Became Part of the WWE Experience
Achberger’s presence became particularly noticeable during WWE’s Ruthless Aggression era, when his signs frequently became part of what viewers saw during televised matches. Rather than trying to take attention away from the action, his humor became another way for the crowd to participate in the show.
That connection lasted well beyond the 2000s. Bayley recalled watching Achberger when she was a child before eventually becoming one of the wrestlers featured on his signs, while Big E remembered looking forward to seeing his trademark red hat and blue shirt at events.
Hurricane Helms also shared one of Achberger’s classic jokes, recalling how a sign that initially appeared to read “HELMS IS GOD” was unfolded to reveal the punchline:
“HELMS IS GOD … AWFUL.”
For wrestlers who spent years seeing Achberger from the ring, his signs became part of the atmosphere surrounding WWE shows. His death leaves behind a distinctive piece of the company’s live-event culture that generations of performers and fans will remember.
