As the Edmonton Oilers continue navigating an offseason that already saw them part ways with longtime head coach Kris Knoblauch, trade discussions involving one of their core defensemen have started to take clearer shape before the start of free agency on July 1.

The situation involves veteran defenseman Darnell Nurse, who requested a trade on June 11 and holds significant control over his destination.

That's because Nurse, who is signed to an eight-year, $78 million deal trhough 2030, has a full no-movement clause and could block any trade the Oilers agree to with another franchise.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, via Jack Studley of Boston Hockey Now, Nurse has now submitted a shortlist of three teams he would be willing to join as trade talks progress.

“Nurse has submitted a list of three teams to Edmonton that he’s interested in playing for,” Friedman said Saturday on NHL Network. “We believe those teams are Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Boston, though there’s no confirmation.”

That group notably includes an Original Six franchise in the Boston Bruins, alongside the veteran-laden Pittsburgh Penguins and the up-and-coming Philadelphia Flyers. It's interesting to note that all of those teams play hockey in the Eastern Conference, which aligns with earlier reports from Friedman about Nurse’s preferences.

“I think it’s mostly East,” Friedman said on June 12. “I don’t believe it’s Canada, but I think it’s mostly East. If there’s a West team—and I stress ‘if’ because I don’t know—I would think it would be [the Los Angeles Kings] simply because he knows the [general] manager there, but I’ve heard the preference is East.”

On Saturday, Friedman also suggested the situation remains fluid despite Nurse's submitted list.

“The Oilers have kind of wanted to see if that might open itself up at all,” Friedman said, noting that other teams, such as the Anaheim Ducks, have emerged as potential fits even if they are not currently on Nurse’s list.

Another factor to consider in the trade talks is the 31-year-old defenseman's salary. He carries a $9.25 million cap hit through the end of the 2030 season, and it's possible Edmonton has to retain some of it to move Nurse.

Nurse is coming off scoring 24 points in 82 regular-season games last season, but he went scoreless in six postseason appearances before the Oilers were eliminated in the first round.
