Is it possible that Jalen Hurts’ blood clot will change the trajectory of the Philadelphia Eagles for years to come?

The Eagles announced Thursday that Hurts will miss this Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to to a superficial blood clot. The Super Bowl MVP received this diagnosis last Saturday before the London game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf. He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report. Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia,” the team said in a statement.

“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter. On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”

During Friday morning’s episode of “Get Up,” ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky discussed Hurts’ situation and what it could mean for the Eagles long-term.

Orlovsky didn’t explicitly say it, but he hinted that Hurts’ absence could eventually lead to the Eagles acquiring his replacement in the offseason.

“Football wise, this is potentially a franchise-changing moment,” Orlovsky said. “… Howie Roseman drafted Jalen Hurts one year after giving Carson Wentz the most guaranteed money ever in the NFL. This organization for 30 years knows the quarterback off ramp. For a team that Hurts has covered up a lot – it just makes this situation franchise-altering.”

If the Eagles are going to replace Hurts, they better be sure they got a superstar waiting in the wings.

Hurts has been Philadelphia’s full-time starter since 2021, racking up 18,824 passing yards and 3,661 rushing yards. He’s been to the Pro Bowl three times and he’s led the Eagles to two Super Bowl appearances.

When will Jalen Hurts return?

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Eagles will keep Hurts off the field until his medical situation is resolved.

Tanner McKee, who is 1-1 as a starter for the Eagles, is expected to lead the offense this weekend against the Panthers. He has completed 54-of-88 career pass attempts for 597 yards with five touchdowns and an interception.

Andy Dalton is also an option for the Eagles if he re-signs with them. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo mentioned that a reunion is possible.

Hopefully, Hurts will be back on the field sooner than anyone expected.
